If you’re from Colorado or British Columbia, or even next-door Vermont, frankly, then Mount Greylock is not going to impress you. Thankfully the skies ahead over New England appear to be as spotless as those over New York.Ībout a quarter of an hour after takeoff, as we are climbing through the high twenty thousands, I get my first glimpse of Mount Greylock. As we retract the flaps, we’re given a series of left-hand turns that bring us (the long way) around to our initial northwesterly routing. Just under an hour later, we depart from 31L. “Then let’s hope it’s just as clear up north,” he says with a smile. I tell the captain about the unusually personal resonance of what’s been loaded into the electronic depths of the flight management computer. A more typical figure for much of the climb would be 3.0, or even lower, numbers that reflect our typical flight paths over the diminutive elevations of Long Island, southeastern New England, and, of course, the ocean itself. The highest figure on our paperwork today is ’4.8′, or 4,800 feet. The first clue is the Minimum Safe Altitude in the first half an hour after takeoff. Still, something is different about this flight. A quick scan of my logbook says I’ve crossed the skies between these two world capitals about 120 times so far in my career. If so, I’m a fairly busy driver of the buses that connect them. There’s a joke that in this day and age New York and London are each merely neighborhoods of the other. Indeed, KFJK and EGLL are the airports that I’ve flown between most often. So far, at least, there’s nothing unusual. I carefully lower my generously-sized coffee into that signature Boeing cup holder and start to program a route to London’s Heathrow Airport. With a larger-than-usual smile on my face, I take my seat on the flight deck of a 747 at Kennedy Airport. It’s a bright spring morning, fine and clear, the kind of day that planes (and pilots) were made for.

If you’re looking to boost your brand’s customer engagement, you’re probably already considering video production. Most vocal covers of “Autumn” have shied away from the verse, opting to stick principally with the chorus. To start, Duke’s original iteration consisted of an unconventional first verse that’s consistently proven unwieldy for vocalists. As he writes in his autobiography, Passport to Paris, it didn’t contain what his publisher saw as “popular appeal.” He put music to it, but he never expected the tune to go anywhere. The song wasn’t even a song at first it was conceived as a poem, seemingly written on a lark and borne out of homesickness for Manhattan, while Duke was summering in Westport, Conn. “April in Paris,” “I Can’t Get Started,” and “Taking a Chance on Love,” are but a few.īut the fact that he continued to write poetry and classical music-for orchestra, chamber ensembles, etc.-as Vladimir Dukelsky (until legally adopting his pen name in 1955) turns out to be of particular consequence in telling the story of one of Vernon Duke’s most enduring standards: “Autumn in New York.” It’s as Duke that he’d partner with the best lyricists of the day-Ira Gershwin, Yip Harburg, Howard Dietz, Ogden Nash, Sammy Cahn, Johnny Mercer-to write songs that have achieved immortality as standards. And so, from Vladimir Dukelsky we get Vernon Duke.Ĭompared to his pal Gershwin who was able to cross over and make iconic contributions to the classical canon, Dukelsky’s contributions to his native form pale. Gershwin had more practical advice, for he, too, was the son of Ukrainian-Jewish immigrants trying to make a living writing music in 1920s America: Change your name to something American-sounding and write popular music. Gershwin’s young charge, still a little green yet, harbored dreams of becoming a classical composer after all, he’d studied under the great Reinhold Glière in Kiev. Dukelsky, five years Gershwin’s junior, had been classically trained at the Kiev Conservatory, where the classical pianist and composer Vladimir Horowitz was a classmate. in 1921, a new friend and would-be mentor convinced Dukelsky to change his surname to Duke. Perhaps that’s why, shortly after he arrived in the U.S. The 1954 edition of Grove’s Dictionary of Music and Musicians claims, in its entry for Dukelsky, that his grandmother was a descendent of Georgian royals (if you’re thinking peaches and Hank Aaron, you’ve got the wrong Georgia). But you’d earn extra credit for knowing that before George Gershwin was George Gershwin, he was born in a Brooklyn tenement to Lithuanian and Ukrainian Jews and named for his paternal grandfather-you guessed it-Jacob Gershowitz. Here’s a clue: ever heard “I Got Rhythm”? That’s George Gershwin, you say? Well, you’d be correct. No, he’s not your periodontist at least that’s not the Jacob Gershowitz I’m referring to. Her accolades included fourteen Grammy Awards, the National Medal of Arts, and the Presidential Medal of Freedom.Let’s play a little game: How much do you really know about your favorite Tin Pan Alley composers?įirst, a relatively easy one: Jacob Gershowitz. Three years later, she died at the age of 79 after years of declining health. In 1993, she ended her nearly 60-year career with her last public performance. After taking over the band when Webb died, Fitzgerald left it behind in 1942 to start her solo career. Fitzgerald's rendition of the nursery rhyme "A-Tisket, A-Tasket" helped boost both her and Webb to national fame. After a tumultuous adolescence, Fitzgerald found stability in musical success with the Chick Webb Orchestra, performing across the country but most often associated with the Savoy Ballroom in Harlem. She was noted for her purity of tone, impeccable diction, phrasing, intonation, and a "horn-like" improvisational ability, particularly in her scat singing. In the endless mode (after the first 2 farmstead missions), death is temporary. There is no negative consequence to fleeing from the battle, other than losing out on the level's bonuses. The torch does not fade over time but instead takes a multitude of different variants. If these are left alive, they explode for HP and Stress damage. Enemy corpses, if ignored, become large crystal formations. The Farmstead differs from the other areas of the game in a number of ways. The first two missions act as a tutorial to the main draw of the place - An: endless mode, where you are pitted against wave after wave of monsters until you are defeated or you flee. It is unique in the fact that it eschews exploration for pure combat - When you enter, you are pitted against a constant stream of monsters, new ones coming in to take the place of the old. The Farmstead is a new location that is introduced in the Color of Madness DLC. 2.4 Battle Strategies and Party Compositions. The only reason why this new source of evil and corruption have not infected the Estate is because of the Enchanted Warding Stones on the perimeter of the Farmstead keep this new Evil contained, but like all things, it is only a matter of time before the barrier is pierced by this Terror from the Stars. Even the stars above the Farmstead are not right none of the recognizable constellations can be seen in the night sky, and the Northern Star is in the wrong position, as if these night skies are not from this time and place. As if the natural flow of time has been distorted beyond recognition, once fertile fields are a lifeless wasteland where only crystallized wheat and mutated pumpkins can grow, and the acres are littered with the fossilized remains of people, livestock, and petrified crops, as if they have aged uncountable years in a blink of an eye. There has been no word from the farm in a fortnight, save for the unearthly groaning that echoes from the ruin of the mill…Įver since the Comet struck the Old Windmill, the Farmstead and its surrounding acres of land have been severely altered by the otherworldly corruption. Some hateful shard of alien origin has streaked through the night sky, crashing into the old Miller’s farm on the outskirts of the Hamlet! Those unfortunate enough to witness the Comet’s arrival have been blinded by what they can only describe as a shifting, ephemeral hue of damnably abrasive intensity. Lands that have, in past years, yielded rich harvests are now sown with a new and terrifying seed-an unrelenting crystalline consumption that inches outward from the mill with each passing season.” “Some blazing malevolence from beyond the stars has crashed upon the Miller’s farm.
